My Coaching Philosophy and Approach

My coaching philosophy is simple:

  • Train efficiently, safely and smartly.
  • Share firsthand experience backed by science.
  • Provide a quality experience with emphasis on results.
  • Ultimately, help my clients better understand the sport and themselves.

In order to compete successfully in any sport, and especially in endurance events like triathlons and marathons, there are four necessary components:

  • Fitness: your overall conditioning, strength, and health leading up to and during an event (e.g. training intensity, recovery, etc.).
  • Equipment: the quality of your equipment and how it suits you (e.g. bike fit, shoes, etc.).
  • Execution: the choices you make that impact you just before and during in a race (e.g. hydration, nutrition, pacing, etc.).
  • Mental State: your thought process and attitude leading up to and during an event (e.g. anxiety level, ability to focus, etc.).

Not necessarily mutually exclusive, the four components provide a framework for separating the elements that enable an athlete to successfully compete in an endurance event. As an elite sports athlete, I attribute the bulk of my success to how I systemically approached my training and racing across these four dimensions. As an endurance sports coach, I work with my clients to help them understand and incoprorate these four aspects into their race preparation and training in order to optimize performance on race day.
